Description
Certain nationals from specific countries are required to obtain an airport transit visa in order to change aircraft at an airport within Schengen country. To determine if you need an airport transit visa, please refer to the list of countries provided.
Please take note: Starting from 1 January 2021, if you are arriving for airport transit in the Netherlands, you will require an airport transit visa, regardless of whether you possess a visa or a residence permit for the United Kingdom.
Visa Validity
Upon receiving your visa, it is crucial to carefully review its contents. If you happen to identify any errors, kindly notify the Netherlands Visa Application Centre. Please be aware that rectifying any errors after leaving the Visa Application Centre will necessitate a new visa registration and the payment of a new handling fee.
Upon receiving your visa via courier, we strongly advise you to promptly inspect it for any inaccuracies. Should you discover any errors, please contact the Visa Application Centre helpline immediately.
The validity of your visa specifies the dates within which you are permitted to enter and depart the Schengen area.
It is important to note that the duration of your stay within the Schengen area is limited to the number of days indicated on your visa, even if the visa-sticker displays a longer validity. Overstaying your permitted duration may result in a two-year visa sanction across all Schengen countries.
For visas valid for more than six months, the maximum duration of stay is 90 days within a 180-day period. If you possess a multiple-entry visa, you are allowed to leave and re-enter the region any number of times within the 180-day period. However, the total combined stay within the region must not exceed 90 days.
Travelling with Children
If you are applying for a short-stay Schengen visa for a minor (a child under 18 years of age), there are specific requirements for the documents that need to be submitted.
When a child travels with only one parent or alone
When a minor travels with only one parent or alone, it is necessary to provide a “consent letter for minors travelling abroad.” This letter serves as an official authorization for the child’s travel. For further information, kindly visit the Travelling with Children page on government.nl.

Once you have filled out the form, please print a copy and bring it with you to your scheduled appointment.
Photo Specification
Please ensure that you include a recent color photograph of yourself, taken within the last six months, adhering to the following specifications:
- Background: The photograph should be taken against a plain light background, preferably white or off-white. This will ensure that your features are clearly distinguishable and stand out against the background.
- Clarity: The photograph must be of high quality, with your face in sharp focus. This will enable us to accurately verify your identity.
- Facial expression: Please maintain a non-smiling expression in the photograph. Additionally, avoid wearing sunglasses, hats, caps, or any head covering, unless it is worn due to religious beliefs or ethnic background.
- Printing: The photograph should be printed on regular photographic paper, as obtained from a camera print. This will ensure that the image is clear and of suitable quality.
- Attachment: Please securely attach (glue) the photograph to the Visa Application Form.
In the event that the submitted photographs fail to meet these requirements, the visa application will be considered incomplete. In such cases, the applicant will be requested to obtain new photographs from the photo booth available at the visa application center.
Processing Time
The application process for a visa begins six months prior to your intended travel date. It is crucial to submit your application no later than 15 working days before your trip.
In most instances, you will receive notification within 15 calendar days regarding the success of your application. However, please note that the decision-making process for visa applications can take up to 45 days (about 1 and a half months).
Certain Schengen member states require the exchange of information on visa applicants. This obligatory check, known as ‘consultation,’ applies to specific nationalities.
