Description

If you are planning to travel to the Netherlands to visit family or friends, including your girlfriend or boyfriend, you will need to apply for a visa.

Visa Validity
Upon receiving your visa at the Visa Application Centre, it is important to carefully check it for any errors. If you notice any mistakes, please inform the staff at the counter immediately. Any corrections needed after leaving the Visa Application Centre will require a new visa registration and payment of a new handling fee.

If your visa is delivered to you by courier, it is essential to check it as soon as possible. If you find any errors, please contact the Visa Application Centre helpline.

The validity of your visa indicates the dates within which you are allowed to enter and leave the Schengen area.

It is important to note that the length of your stay in the Schengen area is limited to the number of days specified on your visa, even if the visa sticker itself has a longer validity. Overstaying your visa can result in a two-year visa sanction for all Schengen countries.

For visas that are valid for more than six months, the duration of stays is limited to 90 days (about 3 months) within a 180-day period. If you have a multiple-entry visa, you are allowed to leave and return to the region multiple times within the 180-day period. However, the total combined stay within the region must not exceed 90 days (about 3 months).

Travelling with Children

If you are applying for a short-stay Schengen visa for a minor (a child under 18 years of age), there are specific requirements for the documents that need to be submitted. Please refer to the checklist for more details.

When a child travels with only one parent or alone

When a minor travels with only one parent or alone, it is necessary to provide a “consent letter for minors travelling abroad.” This document ensures compliance with the regulations. For further information, please visit the Travelling with Children page on government.nl.

Documents Required

Please refer to the checklist for a comprehensive list of requirements for a tourist visa.

To begin the application process, kindly complete the Schengen visa application form online. Once completed, print a copy and bring it with you to your appointment. We highly recommend utilizing the online portal for filling out the form, as it will provide guidance through the application questions and ensure that no essential information is overlooked.

Photo Specification

Please submit one current color portrait of yourself that is no older than six months that satisfies the conditions listed below:

  • Captured on a light background (white or off-white) to make features stand out and contrast with the background.
  • Face-focused and of high clarity
  • Full face: no grinning, no sunglasses, no hats or other head coverings, unless the applicant is wearing them due to his or her ethnicity or religion.
  • Printed from a camera print on standard photographic paper.
  • The photo that is adhered to the visa application form

The visa application will be deemed incomplete if the submitted photos don’t fulfill these specifications (see examples here), and the applicant will be asked to take fresh pictures in the photo booth at the visa application center.

Processing Time

The application process for a visa begins six months prior to your intended travel date. It is crucial to submit your application no later than 15 working days before your trip.

In most instances, you will receive notification within 15 calendar days regarding the success of your application. However, please note that the decision-making process for visa applications can take up to 45 days (about 1 and a half months).

Certain Schengen member states require the exchange of information on visa applicants. This obligatory check, known as ‘consultation,’ applies to specific nationalities.

To keep track of your application status, you can utilize your track & trace code. If you have any inquiries regarding the status of your application, please do not hesitate to contact the Visa Application Centre.

During the processing of your visa application, it is important to note that you will not be able to retain possession of your passport.

Note for Airplane Crew Members

If you are an airplane pilot or cabin crew member, your passport will not need to remain with the embassy throughout the processing of your visa application.
