Description

All applicants, including children and infants, must personally submit their Schengen visa application on their scheduled appointment date.
Please be aware that starting from 1 January 2021, holders of UK Resident Permits/Cards for EU family members are no longer exempt from obtaining a visa when traveling to the Schengen area.

For Non-EU citizens who are unsure whether a Schengen visa is required for travel to the Schengen Area, please click on “Do I need a visa?” to find out.

Simplified Visa Application Process (Directive 2004/38/EC):

This category only applies to family members of EU/EEA citizens who reside in the UK and are traveling to an EU Member State where the EU citizen is not a national.

Please note that family members of Slovenian citizens residing in the UK are unable to apply under Directive 2004/38/EC for travel to Slovenia. Slovenian citizens’ family members will need to apply under the private visit category (family, friends).

The following family members of EU/EEA and Swiss citizens (excluding Slovenian and UK citizens) are eligible to apply for a Schengen visa as an EEA/EU Family member. They are required to submit fewer documents compared to regular tourists and are exempt from paying the applicable visa fee when traveling together with their EEA/EU or Swiss family member:

– Spouse
– Child(ren)
– Registered partner

Any applicant traveling without their EEA/EU or Swiss family member cannot apply as an EEA/EU Family member and must apply for a Tourist visa. This requires providing all the necessary documents and paying the applicable visa fee.

Eligibility:

In order to be eligible to submit a Schengen visa application, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Holding a valid passport or travel document.
  2. Holding a valid UK residence permit. If the applicant holds a short stay visa for the UK (C type visa), they must apply for a Schengen visa from their country of residence.

Applying for a short stay visa is also a requirement for eligibility.

The Schengen visa application process for family members of EU/EEA and Swiss citizens is simplified, allowing for a more efficient and cost-effective experience. However, it is important to note that this privilege does not extend to family members of Slovenian and UK citizens.

As an EEA/EU Family member, you are eligible to apply for a Schengen visa with fewer required documents and without having to pay the applicable visa fee, as long as you are traveling together with your EEA/EU or Swiss Family member. This applies to spouses, children, and registered partners.

It is crucial to understand that if you are traveling without your EEA/EU or Swiss Family member, you cannot apply as an EEA/EU Family member. In such cases, you will need to apply for a Tourist visa, which requires providing all the necessary documents and paying the applicable visa fee.

To ensure a smooth visa application process, the following documents are required:

  1. 1. Filled out and signed visa application form: It is essential to complete all sections of the form, indicating “N/A” for any irrelevant items.
  2. Valid national passport: Your passport must be valid for at least three months longer than your intended stay in order to be eligible for a visa application.

Additionally, please provide one recent color photo that meets the following requirements:

– The photo should be passport size, measuring 3.5 x 4.5 cm.
– The facial image should not occupy more than 70% of the photograph, leaving a 3 to 5 mm empty space on all four sides.
– The photograph can be either black and white or color, with a background of light brown or light blue. White or dark blue backgrounds are not acceptable.
– The person in the photo should not show their teeth.
– The head should be level, with the nose positioned in the middle of the photograph.
– It is important to ensure sharpness and contrast in the photo.
– If the person wears glasses, the frames should not cover their eyes, and there should be no visible reflection on the glasses.
– When photographing children, the hands of parents or toys should not be visible. The best approach is to have them lie down for the photo.
– For fair-haired or white-haired individuals, black and white photos are recommended.

In addition to the photo requirements, please provide the following documents as proof of your residence status in the UK:

– A valid UK residence card, which should remain valid for at least one month beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area.

Furthermore, you must provide proof of your family relationship with an EU citizen. This can be demonstrated through original marriage certificates, birth certificates, proof of durable partnerships, or copies thereof. Additionally, please include the EU citizen’s original passport and a copy of it.

Lastly, you need to submit documents that establish your intention to accompany or join the EU citizen in Slovenia. This can be demonstrated through proof that the EU citizen already resides in Slovenia or confirmation of their travel plans, such as

Photo Specification

Please ensure that you include a recent color photograph of yourself, taken within the last six months, adhering to the following specifications:

  1. Background: The photograph should be taken against a plain light background, preferably white or off-white. This will ensure that your features are clearly distinguishable and stand out against the background.
  2. Clarity: The photograph must be of high quality, with your face in sharp focus. This will enable us to accurately verify your identity.
  3. Facial expression: Please maintain a non-smiling expression in the photograph. Additionally, avoid wearing sunglasses, hats, caps, or any head covering, unless it is worn due to religious beliefs or ethnic background.
  4. Printing: The photograph should be printed on regular photographic paper, as obtained from a camera print. This will ensure that the image is clear and of suitable quality.
  5. Attachment: Please securely attach (glue) the photograph to the Visa Application Form.

In the event that the submitted photographs fail to meet these requirements, the visa application will be considered incomplete. In such cases, the applicant will be requested to obtain new photographs from the photo booth available at the visa application center.

Processing Time

Applicants are welcome to submit their Schengen visa applications up to six months prior to their intended travel date to the Schengen Area. It is important to note that the minimum processing time for a visa application is 15 calendar days. Therefore, it is strongly advised that applicants allow ample time between their appointment date and travel date to ensure the Mission has sufficient time to process their application. However, it is important to understand that delays may occur, and there are no guarantees regarding the return date of the visa application.

For certain nationalities, the visa application may require consultation from other Schengen countries. In such cases, the minimum processing time may be extended up to a maximum of 45 calendar days. This is particularly true when further scrutiny of the application is necessary. To avoid any delays in the visa application process, it is crucial that the application is complete, and all submitted documents adhere to the Mission’s requirements. Please refer to the “Documents Required” section for specific visa categories.

Applicants should also be mindful that during peak seasons, such as Easter, summer holidays (July and August), and Christmas, appointment slots fill up rapidly. So, it is essential to secure an appointment well in advance.

Additionally, applicants must take into account that closures and holidays of Mission may further extend the processing time of visa applications.

Therefore, all applicants need to take the following steps to ensure a smooth and efficient visa application process:

  1. Promptly schedule an appointment as soon as travel plans are confirmed. This will help avoid any last-minute rush and ensure ample time for the necessary preparations.
  2. Thoroughly review and double-check all visa application documentation to ensure it meets the specific requirements set forth by the Mission. This attention to detail will help prevent any unnecessary delays or complications.
  3. Allow for sufficient processing time, taking into account any potential delays that may arise during the visa application process. By allowing for extra time, applicants can minimize any unforeseen setbacks and ensure a timely outcome.

For applicants submitting their visa application in Manchester or Edinburgh, it is important to note that an additional two days should be factored into the minimum processing time.

It is important to understand that the Mission reserves the right to request additional information or documents, as well as invite applicants for an interview, as part of the visa application process. While these requests may cause some delays, it is the responsibility of the applicants to comply and provide the necessary information promptly.
